Országház Street

The street, which starts at the Holy Trinity Square (Szentháromság tér), already served as one of the main thoroughfares of the castle during the Middle Ages.

Initially it was called “Italian Street” because of the number of Florentine craftsmen living there; during the Turkish occupation, because a public baths operated in the street, it was renamed “Baths Street”. Its current name, “Parliament Street”, derives from the fact that the 1790-1807 meeting of the Hungarian National Parliament was held in the convent belonging to the St. Clare Nuns, which also fronted this street.

Many of the existing dwellings, despite having been rebuilt in the Baroque style, still help to recall the street’s medieval character; on many one can still  discover significant medieval details. The houses which most strongly define the character of the street are those at Nos 2, 10, 18, 20 and 22.
