Füzérradvány Chateaux
The small village of Füzérradvány is located in the northern part of Hungary, near the Slovakian border, about 20 km west of Sátoraljaújhely. Füzérradvány’s main attraction is the Károlyi Mansion, which is one of the largest mansions in Hungary.
According to the available sources, at the turn of the 17th-18th centuries the mansion was a symmetrically laid out building, mirroring late-Renaissance traditions. It was a simplified form of an Italian type mansion which had four corner-bastions. The building was rebuilt in a Romantic-eclectic style between 1857 and 1859. Füzérradvány - Károlyi Mansion The southern and eastern wings of the F-shaped building are two-storeyed, the transverse north wing is only single-storeyed; these three, together with a stone parapet which forms the fourth side, enclose a formal courtyard. The most characteristic part of the mansion is the main façade of the eastern side, facing the park; this has a loggia, and a slim, tall, octagonal tower at its centre. During the 1930’s, the mansion was converted into a luxury-hotel. In 1945 it was nationalised and transformed into a tuberculosis sanatorium. Since 1993 it belongs to the National Trust for Historic Monuments. In the middle of the 19th century, the fruit garden was converted into an English style park. The park around the mansion was originally part of the surrounding forest. Since 1975 it has been a Nature Protection Area; a marvellous arboretum, it is also the largest and one of the most beautiful parks in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County. Füzérradvány - Károlyi Mansion |
